Some of these beautiful old windows were taken out of the old Somerset School which was demolished in 2005. The windows have been lovingly repaired and are in excellent condition. Somerset School was named in honour of J.B. Somerset who was Chief Superintendent of Education for the Province of Manitoba from 1885 to 1887. By 1901 the area west of the Central Collegiate was filling up, so the Board built a 10-room-and-assembly-hall school on Nena (later Sherbrook) Street and named it after J.B.Somerset, an early superintendent. It incorporated all the recent improvements including a drinking "fount" in each classroom and electric fixtures, "in place of having to use oil lamps". |
